Patriotic Civil War Tokens

There was a sizable population of German immigrants in New York City. Many of them were highly skilled in metal working trades. A few other New York City die sinkers of apparent German extraction were: Louis Roloff, George Glaubrecht, and Louis Leichtweis. It is likely that a good number of this group were of Jewish faith.

Since the customers for these Star of David Patriotic Civil War Tokens were also German merchants, they were also issued store cards. One of the more popular Civil War Store Cards from New York City is that of FELIX (which is the Jewish letters for ‘kosher’) DINING SALOON, located at 256 Broadway. I believe I can support that they likely ordered this fairly common set of designs.
