Patriotic Civil War Tokens
In September of 1862, President Abraham Lincoln released the Emancipation Proclamation with the resounding words, “Thenceforward and forever free!” These were the words that came to be inscribed upon these tokens in shortened form, “Now and Forever.” A set of Patriotic Civil War Tokens letting slaves know they were now free of their bondage to a master. Unfortunately, most Patriotic Civil War Tokens were produced in the North and the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to areas not controlled by the Federal Union. So, they probably didn’t see too many of these tokens.
