Draped Bust Half Cent Value Facts

Date – Mint Rarity:

Common date Draped bust Half Cent value begins at $55 and can be as high as $5,000 and the lower the mintage the more valuable. An 1800 is a common date while the 1802/0 Reverse of 1802 is a key date with a mintage of 20,266 and an average value of $60,000.

Grade – Condition:

Draped Bust Half Cents are desirable and valuable and all are worth at least $55 in G4 (Good) but it’s crucial to understand condition when it comes to these coins. Theses coins are copper and the planchets were often of poor quality so they reacted to their environment and corroded.

You also had people scratching, cleaning and damaging these coins so you will find more in problem conditions than not and these will sell for less than $40 unless they’re a low mintage date or a rare variety.

It’s a little confusing to determine the values of higher grade examples because you have some conditional factors to consider.

G4 Draped Bust Half Cent Value

G4 Draped Bust Half Cent

Note that when I mention a grade like G4 that means the coin is problem free – never cleaned, not pitted, or damaged in any way. If the coin has a “grainy” appearance or seems to have tiny holes, or scratches, or looks “pinkish” then it’s a problem coin and will sell for less than the values listed.

You also have three conditional factors that determine the value of a Draped Bust Half Cent and they are: Red (RD), RB (Red-Brown), BN (Brown). A RD coin is going to have at least 90% original luster as struck by the mint and is the most valuable condition. The luster conditions only apply to mint state coins so any circulated coin will be designated BN.
