Patriotic Civil War Tokens

Almost comical in nature how these token dies present the simple message, “Busy as bees.” While most of the general merchandise type stores were suffering, industry was booming with their support for the war efforts. Especially in the northeast states, which included New York where W.K. Lanphear lived. Both token dies are attributed to William K. Lanphear, even though the initials CDH are found on the token F-188. CDH borrowed Lanphear’s design, so credit is still given to Lanphear. Lanphear was known for his use of unique motifs and stylized lettering in his engravings.
