Roosevelt Silver Dime Value Facts:

Date – Mint Rarity:

Silver Roosevelt Dimes are considered junk silver to most dealers because they’re numerous, most are circulated and they don’t garner the respect of other silver dimes. You can currently buy any date and mint for $1.50 to $5.00 each, depending on the grade.

You just don’t have any key dates from 1946 through 1964 and it’s affordable to put togther a complete set in most grades.

Grade – Condition:

If you’re looking for a high premium Roosevelt Dime value then you will need to look for coins that grade at least MS67 (Mint State) and with FB or FT (Fully Split Torch Bands) on the reverse.

Any date from 1946 through 1964 with FB and in the grade MS68 will be worth several hundred dollars to several thousand of dollars depending on the date and mint mark.

Most dates are still valuable in MS68 even if they don’t have FB so don’t exclude any possible high grade examples.

Varieties:

The most valuable Roosevelt Dime is the 1975 No S proof so look for these in proof sets as well as the 1970, 1983 with the S mint mark. The 1975 No S proof is so rare that it’s worth $349,600 if graded and certified in a PCGS holder.

Other notable proof varieties include the 1960 and 1963 Doubled Dies.

Mercury Dime Value Facts:

Date – Mint Rarity:

Mercury Dimes are common and most are worth their silver melt or currently $1.50 to $5.00 each depending on their grade, but there’s a few key dates to mention. The 1916-D is the key date and it’s worth at least $500, if authenticated, and that’s followed by the 1921 and 1921-D which are worth at least $50 each.

Grade – Condition:

Grade and condition is more important than mintage when it comes to each Mercury Dime value. The ideal grade is MS63 or higher with Full Split Torch Bands, the bands are on the reverse and they’re more rare struck with fully split torch bands.

However, there’s a few dates and mints that are valuable in lesser grades like the 1926-S, 1924-D, 1925-S, but any date from 1931 and back with a D or S is worth a decent premium in at least EF (Extremely Fine) or better.

Mercury Dime proofs are worth a substantial premium and they’re dated from 1936 through 1942. The Mercury Dime values for proofs is several hundred dollars to thousands for certain grade conditions.

1916-D Mercury Dime value AG3
1916-D Mercury Dime AG3

Varieties:

The 1942/1-D and no mint mark (Philadelphia Mint) are the most well known varieties and are worth at least $400 in AG3 (About Good) and into the thousands mint state grades.

Barber Dime Value Facts:

Date – Mint Rarity:

Most Barber Dime dates and mints are numerous and worth just about silver melt, but there’s some rare dates and mints to look for.

The 1895-O has the lowest mintage at 440,000 and it’s value begins at $300; the highest mintage goes to 1907 (P) at 22,220,000 and the value begins at $3.00. So mintages do determine a base value but so many have been melted that there’s not much more use for mintage figures.

The 1892 might have been the first year of this series but Philadelphia minted 12,120,000 and you can buy it for as low as $3 and some change, but the 1892-O and 1892-S have lower mintages and worth more.

So age does not determine value but how many were initially minted and how many have survived today and how many survived in certain grades.

Also don’t over-look proof Barber Dimes since they can be found for all dates and for reasonable values since most start at $250. The exception is the ultra rare 1894-S that trades for 2 million or more with only 10 are known but 24 where minted, so you never know when another will be discovered or by whom.

Grade – Condition:

Barber Dime value is determined by grade, second to their mintage and survival amounts. Obviously the higher the grade the more they’re worth, but there’s a couple things some collectors over-look or just don’t realize.

One, the vast majority of Barber Dimes are common and worth around $3 and many of these are considered well worn “slicks” and they’re often found damaged or cleaned in some way. So condition and grade matters a lot.

Second, you might have a common coin that’s common in every grade until AU (About Uncirculated) and that’s when it increases in value dramatically. 1899 is one example that more than doubles in value from EF (Extremely Fine) to AU but the mintage is high at 19,850,000.

So don’t look at the date alone but look at date plus mint, and grade, then condition to determine Barber Dime value.

Varieties:

The Barber Dime series is known for many varieties and the most listed and well known is the 1893/2 and the 1905-O Micro O and both are affordable in lower grades, but dramatically increase in value at AU.

However there’s several other and lesser known varieties for different dates and mints and these are over-dates, repunched dates, and repunched mint marks.

Seated Dime Value Facts:

Date – Mint Rarity:

Seated Dime value is determined, in part, do to their mintage figures reported by the U.S. Mint, but no Seated Dime date and mint survive in their original mintage amount today.

One example is the 1873-CC No Arrows at date has a reported mintage of 12,400 but only one specimen is known and it sold for $1.8 million. There might be more out there, waiting to be found; and this is an example of how they’ve been melted and lost over the years – few have survived except for the more numerous mintage dates and mints.

The proofs are numerous as a whole and most are affordable but there’s some extreme rarities with only a few known and those are worth looking for.

Grade – Condition:

When you find this coin type and denomination they will usually grade AG3 (About Good) or less, so Seated Dime value will be less than what you see listed in the price guides since most list values for G4 and up.

You can buy common date and low grade Seated Liberty Dimes for around $5 each but the 1874-CC can sell for as much as $9,000 in G4; but the 1874-CC is the exception rather than the rule.

A Seated Dime with an O, CC or S mint mark have more of a premium than the no mint mark (Philadelphia Mint) examples. However there’s some exceptions to this and that’s the 1879, 1880, 1881 no mint mark (Philadelphia Mint); these three are the most valuable without a mint mark and their value averages around $160 each.

Then the 1885-S is another post 1874 date that’s worth a decent premium and can range from $300 to several thousands in the higher grades.

Most Seated Dimes are reasonable up through the AU (About Uncirculated) grade but they jump in value for MS (Mint State) grades that starts at MS60. One example is the 1889-S, it’s worth around $80 in AU but jumps to around $400 in MS60 according to PCGS coin values.

PCGS is important here since they show a higher *population for the 1889-S in AU and a lower population in MS60, and they grade thousands of coins a month. So most coins like this should be graded by NGC or PCGS.

*Reported PCGS graded examples.
G4 Seated Dime Value
G4 Seated Dime

Varieties:

There’s a few varieties to be found in this series but most don’t add much of a premium in the lower grades, they’re typically found, but as grade increases as do some values. For example the The 1837 Large and Small dates are the same value until they reach the MS60 and that’s when the Small Date is worth a bit more and the 1838 Small Stars is not worth much of a premium until VF30 (Extrememly Fine).

Other varieties to look for is 1840 Drapery and No Drapery, 1838 Partial Drapery, 1853 No Arrows, and 1856 Large Date and there’s 1972 Doubled Die Reverse (DDR) and 1973 Doubled Die Obverse (DDO). All of these are worth several hundred dollars in the higher grades.

Specifications:
Designer: Obverse by Thomas Sully, executed by Christian Gobrecht; Reverse by Christian Gobrecht

Metal content: Silver – 90%, Copper – 10%
Weight: 41.3 grains (27 grams)

*Seated Liberty Dimes have potential as an investment since most of the mintages and survival rates for most dates and mints is low in value when compared to similar numbers for other coin types and denominations.

Capped Bust Dime Value Facts:

Date – Mint Rarity:

All Capped Bust Dimes are low mintage with none over 1,410,00 so each date is worth a premium over their melt value. Usually a raw coin will be worth at least $35 in the G4 (Good) grade and sometimes a little less if they’re cleaned or damaged in some way. You will find many that are damaged, extremely worn and cleaned, and this does decrease their value.

1822 is the key date of the series and worth around $1,400 in the lowest values and 1809 is not far behind but must be a grade or two higher to realize the same premium as the 1822.

Capped Bust Dime value for proofs is extremely high with all of them being worth at least $8,000 in PR60, but not all dates have a proof counterpart, so potential proofs should be checked by an expert or certified by a reputable grading service.

Grade – Condition:

Grade is all important and and grade condition coins are the rarities in this series, and are a huge factor in Capped Bust Dime value. For example, 1835 is rare but is common for this series with a starting value around $30 in G4 but in AU (Almost Uncirculated) it’s worth around $350 and in MS63 (Mint State) it can sell for around $1,600.

Varieties:

You have some valuable varieties in this series but not all varieties are worth more, in example, the 1811/09 is worth less than the normal 1809, but this is the exception rather than the rule.

The most valuable and sought after variety is the 1829 Curl Base 2 with a starting value of over $6,000, and you have several other values that don’t reach their value potential in the lower grades but do increase dramatically in high grades.
